Have you not linked your Aadhaar number and Permanent Account Number card yet? Then hurry up.. the last date is nearing. The government of India has further extended the last date to link your Aadhaar number with your Permanent Account Number card. The last date was March 31 but now it has been extended till June 30, 2021. This particular decision has been taken by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in view of the increasing number of cases of COVID- 19.
If you have not yet linked your Aadhaar number and Permanent Account Number (Permanent Account Number), then do so at the earliest possible because on not doing so you may have to pay a penalty of Rs. 10,000 or more and there are chances of your Permanent Account Number card becoming inoperative.
What did Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) publish in their recent notification?
According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes, if Permanent Account Number becomes inoperative with effect from July 1, 2021, you will not be able to use your Permanent Account Number to conduct financial transactions wherever quoting of Permanent Account Number is mandatory. Some of these financial transactions include the opening of a bank account, investing in a fixed deposit, filing of income tax returns, etc. According to chartered accountants, if an individual’s Permanent Account Number becomes inoperative and such an individual is required to quote, furnish or intimate the Permanent Account Number wherever required, then it shall be deemed as he/she has not furnished the same. Further, he/she will be liable for consequences under the Income-tax Act, 1961.
The following announcement was announced by the Income Tax Department through their official Twitter account saying the above decision of extending the deadline of linking your Aadhaar number and Permanent Account Number card till June 30, 2021, which was before March 31, 2021, and the reason behind this decision stating the worst situation of COVID- 19 pandemic.
Oh okay. So what is the way to check the Permanent Account Number- Aadhaar link status online?
Here is the process of checking Permanent Account Number- Aadhaar link status online:
- Go to the Income Tax e-filing portal through the below link: https://www1.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-FilingGS/Services/LinkAadhaarHome.html?lang=eng
- Enter your Permanent Account Number (Permanent Account Number) and Aadhaar card number.
- Click on the ‘check status’ option after filling in the above details.
- On following the above 3 steps, you will automatically get to see whether your Permanent Account Number and Aadhaar has been linked or not.
If your Permanent Account Number and Aadhaar have not been linked, then go to the same above link and instead of going to the ‘check status’ option, enter your Permanent Account Number card number, Aadhaar number, and enter your name as per your Aadhaar card. After entering these details, enter the given Captcha and click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option.

Here is how to check the Aadhaar- Permanent Account Number link status via SMS as well. If in any case, it is not possible for you to check the status online, then you can check through SMS mode. For that, you just have to send an SMS to 567678 or 56161 through your registered mobile number.
While sending an SMS, you have to type UIDAIPermanent Account Number (12 digit Aadhaar number) space 10 digit Permanent Account Number number. Ex: UIDPAN 987654320001 XYZZ0123A
Linking of Aadhaar with Permanent Account Number allows the Income Tax Department to meticulously detect any form of tax evasion. The process of filing income returns becomes considerably easy as the individual is not required to provide any proof of him or her having filed their income tax returns.
