Is it safe to get vaccinated during menstruation?

As we all are aware that the Union Government has been giving Covid vaccines for the past 3 months starting from healthcare and frontline workers. The second group to receive the COVID-19 vaccine are persons over 60 years of age and persons between 45 and 59 years with comorbid conditions. Owing to the serious rise in the COVID-19 cases across the country, the Union Government decided to initiate the third phase from May 1st.

May 1 onwards, the vaccination drive started for people above 18 years but since most of them trying to get their registration done for getting vaccinated, the vaccination website’s server went down for a day and after few days people were informed that the country is falling short of vaccines for the people who are supposed to take their second dose, vaccination for people above 18 years is suspended for a few days.

What is the new rumour that is being spread on social media?

During all this news regarding the compulsory need of the hour for everyone to get vaccinated, there was also this rumour saying that women are not supposed to take their dose of vaccination during their menstruation days. To make it very clear, everyone must and should know that this is just a rumour and not the reality. All women whether during their menstruation days or during their pregnancy or breastfeeding women can take their dose of the vaccine without any fear.

We all know that menstruation is quite a natural process and every woman will have to face it at some point of time in their life but due to lack of awareness and knowledge in people, they tend to spread such rumours saying women are not supposed to take their dose of the vaccine while they are undergoing their menstruation because it may end up having side effects leading up to infertility in such women. But there is no correct strong proof proving this myth. This rumour is spread in social media by some unknown sources having no proof proving the same.

One of the experts, that is, Dr Astha Dayal of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, CK Birla Hospital in Gurgaon, said that “COVID vaccine can safely be taken during periods. There is no data or study validating this claim. The vaccine is life-saving and should be taken as early as possible. Currently, the vaccine is safely recommended for all women above 18, excluding pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.”

What should you know about vaccination? How is it safe during menstruation?

There are lakhs of women who got vaccinated already, but there are no such signs of women facing any kind of side effects. So to make it clear how the COVID vaccine actually works, here is what you need to know:

  1. Firstly, all COVID vaccines are fully functional, trustworthy and safe. Getting yourself vaccinated does not mean that you are free from catching the virus, instead, it builds your immune system to be able to fight against the virus if you are infected.
  2. Lastly, one needs to know that you have to get yourself vaccinated if not for you but for the safety of the community and people around you. Some people argue saying that they are healthy and don’t need to get their vaccinations. You need to know that you may be asymptomatic towards the virus wherein you don’t get to know whether you are infected or not but the people around you with lower immunity and showing symptoms may fall ill and be serious. Hence if not from the individual point of view, think from the society point of view and get yourself vaccinated.
